What is the rapid plasma reagin (RPR) test?

The rapid plasma reagin (RPR) test is a blood test used to screen for syphilis. This test is based on the detection of non-specific antibodies produced by the body to fight infection.

Syphilis is a sexually transmitted infection caused by the spirochete bacterium Treponema pallidum. If left untreated, it can lead to death.

The RPR test allows your doctor to confirm the diagnosis of an active infection and start your treatment. This makes it possible to prevent complications and spread of the disease by an infected but unaware person.

When is RPR testing recommended?

Your doctor may order an RPR test for several reasons. This method is a rapid method for screening people at high risk for syphilis. If you have syphilis-like sores or rashes, your doctor may also do this test. Doctors also routinely screen pregnant women for syphilis using the RPR test.

The RPR test measures the antibodies present in the blood of a syphilis patient, not the bacteria that causes the disease. After an effective course of antibiotic therapy, your doctor will see a decrease in the number of antibodies, and an RPR test can confirm this.
